2015 in photos

Posted on

Well MY 2015 in photos I guess. Yes, here we go again! 2 photos per month, sorry I’m late. (Also I’ve been REALLY lazy with this blog this year….)

Some months had WAY photos  more than others, espeically the summer months. Oct/Nov were pretty slim in the photo department…

From a Dandelion

Photo taken: July 28  (well, 1 photo – when I got the idea but realized I needed more light) and July 29.  Text written July 29. I wish I had a macro something. I do not. One day, one day…

My time has come. I am nothing but a seed sphere
but the wind will carry my dedicate seeds
where they will grow
in your lawn
(and maybe your neighbours’ too.
fear not, they’re indiscriminatory)

but my dear minions will grow
taller than your grass
crowned by yellow suns
where they will overcrowd your dying grass
much too joyous for your desolate excuse of a meadow
where they will live and dance in the wind
until they too, go to seed

we are not poisonous
we are edible, nutritious even
some say that we cure things
even cultivate us

But you want us out of your lawn
since we are not the image
of the the ideal lawn, of what should be
not in tune with your expectations
somehow lesser than the manufactured grasses
so you try to knock us with your weedeater
but you will not win
for our roots are firmly in the ground
and we will grow once again
and again, and again, and again
we will not be overcome
we will not be conquered
and well, we grow like weeds

What I’ve been up to?

Frankly, not much…

But here’s some photos. So I’m a bit lazy…. since I don’t feel like re-uploading photos or crowding my server space more, here’s some things collected around the web that I’ve done (mostly FB, Instagram and Flickr).

These are from June/July 2015.

LOTS of embedded photos so I will break it from here.

2014: My Year in Photos

Posted on

Sometimes it has a lot to do with what I’m doing, sometimes it doesn’t.  A few are personal, most have probably been seen before. 2 photos per month seem to show the best. Well, except I wanted to stick a snow photo in November but….oh well. Some months I had a lot of photos to choose from, others, less so.

2014.  It was weird.  This was  the first full year out of school. This is a full year in limbo, with very little structure.  There were quite a few highs but there were also a few somewhat disastrous things and lows.  Some things proved way more complicated/harder then it seemed.

This is the first full year I had my current camera (I got it spring 2013) and also the first year I had access to an additional zoom lens with a bit more reach.

**Now with some links to albums with photos from the same shoot to case you wanted to go down a time wasting rabbit hole…occasionally sort of literally :-P. It’s more the recent photos with linked albums – mostly with pruned down albums. Sort of. .**

February 9th, 2014 – Chinese New Year Lantern Festival – Year of the Horse! (I rode little that month though as my coach was away and such…). With random kid… [phone photo]

March

Didn’t take a ton of photos in March either…

March 5, 2014 – Libby at Pony Pals takes a little nap (ignore the poo pile….)

May 21, 2014. Eagle on the stupid Iona Beach jetty. Also learned what kind of bag you don’t want to wear with your camera gear while walking for 8km (4km each direction, it’s not like you can take a shortcut once at the other end) on a strip of whatever that never ends.

June

September

I was actually pretty literally lame in September so it was amazing I have any photos at all! Hence most were towards the end of the month. I was kind of stuck on the couch for most of the month…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

September 21, 2014 – family’s ash scattering ceremony for my grandfather who died earlier that month (he was 81). Edited photo (obviously).  It was a toss up between this photo and the photo of my family gathering around (and strangely smiling…?).

September 24, 2014 – the minis at Tiny Tales Pony Rescue (these minis are not rescues though) enjoy some carrots.  [phone photo]  Shadow is in the middle, Spot and Winterhawk are on the side? To be honest I haven’t quite figured out who is who. Used my phone since I didn’t bring my camera.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANovember 15, 2014 – One of the many stills I took (I took both behind the scenes video and stills that day though) during the Graffiti PSA shoot with Frames Film Project. It’s almost impossible to find a photo with most of the crew in it (or cast and crew in it…) so in the end, I chose a photo of the slate lol. Too many photos!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADecember 6, 2014 – This is the holiday photo I guess.  Jack, Kim’s temporary charge. [More photos from that]

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADecember 13, 2014 – Great Blue Heron (I think?) at  Reifel Bird Sanctuary [more photos from that]

Well, I did get photos for every month of the year at least….

Unless indicated all photos are shot with an Olympus PEN micro four thirds camera. Phone photos taken with an Nexus 4.

Edit – BONUS!

All ready for the New Year  with the 2009 Horse Calendar that is still there* , 2015 Tiny Tales Pony Rescue Society Calendar and 2015 Horse Lovers’ Calendar (the small one). The 2015 ones were given to me (one for Xmas). Despite that I haven’t used paper calendars of any sort since like 2008. I had no calendars last year and now I have 3…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

*Now that it’s 2015, the 2009 calendars work again! (except for Easter and maybe a few other holidays that don’t match, most of the major ones do..). Yes, that’s my justification for the 2009 horse calendar that’s still on my wall – since 2009 Not that I actually use paper calendars anyway – I mostly use Google Calendar.

You can use your 2009/2015 calendars again in 2026…sigh, longer than this time (every 11 or 6 years for most common calendars – longer for rarer ones)

Anyway, I’m kind of glad 2014 is over since it kind of was progressively spiralling somewhere (down? out of control? I dunno, part of it weren’t that great anyway…) the last month or two of it.

Things I learned from photographing at a horse show

Things I learned from photographing at a horse show (casually, I am no pro….yet lol)

1) You cannot catch everything. They are moving too fast for you to zoom in and be there at every step. (Thus, if you do want everything you’ll need multiple people to catch everything)

2) Use the sequence shooting/continuous shooting mode. That way you’ll have several photos fractions of a second part and can chose which ones you like.

3) Prefocus so you don’t have to worry about the autofocus thinking. If you exposure controls are a bit clunky (like mine), use a auto or semi-automatic mode. You will not be able to fix the exposure when the time counts anyway!

4) With continuous shooting, hold down that shutter button as the horse goes over the jump, keeping your framing in mind. Don’t be shy. Ride through it with the shutter!

5) Plan ahead…wait for the horse to come to you because attempting to “chase” the horse doesn’t work as well…for me. Plant your camera at a jump…you should be able to hear the horse approach. Hold down the shutter once you see the horse in your frame.

HOWEVER, there is a disadvantage to this technique. If something else happens while not at THAT jump, you’re out of luck. If they bail out on the horse before then, you’re out of luck.

Some photos here on my Facebook (post is set to public) and my Flickr account is inundated with them)

December Seafoam

Posted on

It’s December.
But it’s sunny today. And freezing, west-coast style.  It’s not quite winter (Dec 21) but it’s close enough.

The beach is near deserted. The wind, chilling, yet rejuvenating.  And the sea continues to churn.

Waves

Sea foam. Sea froth.  Flowing over the rocks, waving with the waves. To grow, and subside. Again and again. Polishing the rocks, little by little. Rocks to sand.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Foam wave after another, the sound of the water’s gentle roar of it’s breathing. The ocean’s blood may be cold today but it is alive.  Yet today, it is gentle, subdued. Showing us only its beauty of its foam, its strength.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For some reason, these photos and the beach today reminds me a bit of some of  poems from Sea Garden by H.D. (Hilda Doolittle)   Except I’m not quite as good as a poet as her and this post isn’t really a poem (it’s prose with “poetic tendencies”..).
